Shukutoku University Asian Research Institute for International Social Work (ARIISW) is the first place for you to contact when you want to work with Japanese colleagues or institutions or to study in and/or about Japan.
The main mission of ARIISW is to learn from, work with, and provide research opportunities and results to you, colleagues from other countries, to contribute to the advancement of research and education in the field of social work across Asia and the world.
The Institute also has a special mission to serve as a hub for research and education in Buddhist "social work" in Asia.
The Institute is non-sectarian and non-profit. It was established on April 1, 2014, in commemoration of the 50th anniversaries in 2015 of the birth of Shukutoku University and the passing of its founder, Ryoshin Hasegawa, a pioneer of Buddhist "social work" in Japan.
Let's work together to make social work serviceable for all people on the earth.
Social work was born in Europe (First Stage) and grew up in North America to be professional social work (Second Stage). It is now heading for the Third Stage, the common asset of all parts of the world. The simple dissemination of Western-rooted Professional Social Work or the simple repetition of "professionalization" is not the way we should take, even if adding a flavor of "indigenization". Social work often poses objections to "globalization" and constantly works against its byproducts, negative effects, it bears. But social work seldom questions its own globalization---"the globalization of social work itself."
Let's be sincere in our intellectual endeavor.
