School of Communication and Design

Tokyo Campus
Introduction of School
The School of Communication and Design fosters the “ability to communicate” based on “symbiosis mind,” which is the founding principle of Shukutoku University. To communicate your feelings, you need to understand the feelings of others. In order to convey what you want to express, you need to know the “happiness (or pain)” of others. We nurture the ability to communicate based on the spirit of “自利利他 ” which means to respect others, not “自利 ” which means to be self-assertive.

Features of Learning
Challenge to theater, a comprehensive art
In “Creative Expression I (Acting),” which is a required class for first-year studentsofthe School of Communication and Design, students challenge themselves to create their original play every year. They are divided into groups and create
everything by themselves, from the script to direction, lighting, sound, costumes, and stage sets. Through this experience, students learn that the stage is made up by many people, as well as the importance ofeach individualindependently taking
the initiative to cooperate with their peers.

Learn from professionals who are active on the front lines
We invite professionals of expression as visiting professors or specially appointed professors. Those who are active in various fields such as producers, writers, journalists, editors, lyricists, playwrights, performers, and voice actors give lectures based on practical experience.Improve literary expression skills
Language is essential to expression. Above all, "Creative Expression (Writing)," which is a required class for first-year students, serves as a foundation for improving writing skills. In the first semester, students will learn basic expressions and compose essays about what they feel in their daily lives to create a class essay collection. In the second semester, students will acquire knowledge and skills for rich literary expression by working on a variety of genres, including drafting food reports, producing catalogs, creating copies, and writing texts tailored to the target readers.

Various expressions
The ways to convey your thoughts and feelings to others in an easy-to-understand manner include expression by writing or words and that through pictures or other creations. In order to cultivate rich ability of expression, we also incorporate Suiboku-ga (ink painting) techniques and calligraphy into our classes, where students learn a variety of expressions to make others empathize and to make themselves understood.Professional equipment
We have a theater, broadcasting station, and editing studio dedicated to the School of Communication and Design on campus, which can be used not only for classes but also for club and circle activities.

Community collaboration project
Campus is not the only place for students to learn. In the community collaboration projects with Itabashi City Office and Shimura Police Station, students canactually experiencecommercial video, poster, comic, and copy production, and an event
moderator and shadow announcer. They have opportunities to contribute to the community by means of their own various expressions.
