College of Education's
On-Site Education for Teachers-to-Be
For students who want to be teachers in nursery schools, kindergartens, and elementary schools, the actual educational setting is a great place to learn. At Shukutoku University, in particular, based on the philosophy of “practical education,” the Elementary Education Course offers two-week visit to an elementary school in the “School Internship” class, and the Preschool Education Course offers one-week visit to a kindergarten in the “Field Study” class, from the first year, where students will acquire practical skills through direct contact with children. We offer a variety of programs to help students combine hands-on learning in educational settings with theoretical learning at the university in order to cultivate their high-quality practical teaching skills, and experience the depth of education that cannot be found through classroom learning alone.

Train Students with High English Skills and Teaching Skills

In March 2017, a new Course of Study was announced, English education courses have been adopted as “Foreign Language Activities” in the middle grades, and “Foreign Language Course” in the upper grades of elementary schools. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to secure personnel who can teach at elementary schools as specialized teachers with advanced English teaching skills. Thus, it is required to train and produce elementary school teachers with excellent English teaching skills. The School of Child Education offers opportunities for systematic and practical English learning over four years in order to train students with high English skills and teaching skills.

Child-Rearing Support Program

This program provides a playground for local parents and children, where students acquire practical teaching skills through interaction with children, making use of “specialized knowledge” and “childcare skills” they have learned at university. Students will form small groups and visit local nursery schools and childcare support facilities as “Shukutoku Waku Waku Play Team” or invite local parents and children to the university. Through interactions with children making use of what they have learned at university, such as towel play and panel theater, students will meet many smiling faces and learn childcare skills and how to relate to children and their parents. Upon completion of the semester-long group-based hands-on program, participants receive a certificate, and in the second semester, we provide consultation and referrals to volunteer destinations so that students can move on to their own initiatives. Through a series of such efforts, students will realize round-trip learning between experience and theory, and acquire more practical teaching skills.
