The need for a hospital for the poor at Bath resulted from the great number of strangers who came to Bath for the benefit of the waters: "The great concourse of Poor resorting to this City for the use of the medicinal waters, and begging of the gentry here for their support, induced several well-disposed persons to think of a scheme of erecting an Infirmary, or Hospital, for the Cure and Maintenance of such poor Strangers.
