034. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CHARITIES. A fine collection of pamphlets relating to the Northampton County Infirmary for the Sick and Lame Poor which was established September 20, 1743 and opened for the reception of patients on March 29, 1744.

The rules state that over and above the stated number of beds "there be kept three Beds always ready to receive Strangers or others, who with broken limbs, or by any other dreadful accidents, stand in need of immediate relief. "

The second section, the Appendix, contains "An abstract of the Rules and Orders of the County Infirmary, in relation to admission of patients, etc. weekly business of the Committee, and duty of the house-visitors: together with an account of the contributions towards the purchase of the Infirmary, a list of the Annual Subscriptions and Benefactions, the number of patients curd, and the calculation of expense for each patient."

The second section, the Appendix, contains ' An account of the Rise, Progress, and Present state of the County Infirmary', 'The manner in which the House-Visitors examine' , ' A List of the Annual Subscribers and Benefactions' , ' The number of Patients curd from the Opening of the Infirmary'; and 'The calculation of the expense for each patient'.

Robert Lucas of Hardingstone, Northamptonshire. A Few Hints on Parochial Clubs pp.111-127 begins with reference to Acland's Proposal for Friendly Societies for the benefit of the Poor. Lucas argues for an extension of the schemes, at present prevailing to any extent only in large towns, to the country villages. "Villages are, certainly, as susceptible of the Advantages of these Societies as other places, and it is for the purpose of spreading their benefits to a wider extent, that I have taken the liberty of troubling the reader with any thoughts on the subject."
