up by Chadwick; and it is one of the most important documents in the history of the
first half of the nineteenth century. Its recommendations included for the first time
national responsibility for drainage, cleaning the streets, paving, light, and water
supply, and a national health and burial service. The Health Boards of 1848, the Local
Government Board of 1871 and today's Ministry of Health are all directly traceable to
Chadwick's report."
