London : James Bowden, 1897. 370p.+6p. advts. Original cloth. nice copy. A grim picture of the working condition of some of the industrial workers at the end of the Nineteenth Century. Sections include “The Alkali Workers”, “The Nailmakers”, “The Slipper-Makers and Tailors”, “The Woolcombers”, “The White lead Workers”, “The Chainmakers”. The frontispiece sets the tone of the volume: it shows the body of female workers under the caption “Done to death”. The Appendix is longer than appeared in the reissue of 1898 and the whole book was trimmed back by some 50 pages for the later edition.
