Harry Potter's Rock Cakes

Hi everybody!

Susan M.Williams

Welcome back to school after the summer holidays. Autumn is here and we are all looking forward to enjoying the tastes of the season and my tutor group (ゼミ) are thinking along the same lines.

This semester our research topic is ‘The United Kingdom’. One of our members loves baking cakes so she is going to be looking at the history of cake making in the UK.

This week’s activity was making rock cakes. Rock cakes are a traditional children’s favorite cake. If you have read any of the Harry Potter books you will know that they were Harry’s tea-time favorite. Hagrid had a special recipe. They are very easy to make and usually they are the first cakes that children learn to bake.

Here is the recipe and instructions for making them. Why not have a go? It’s really easy and great to eat.

Harry Potter’s Rock Cakes

Ingredients.

225g flour

3 teaspoons baking powder

110g butter

60g granulated sugar

110g of mixed dried fruit. (raisins, cranberries etc.)

55g currants

1 egg, beaten.

1 – 3 tablespoons milk

Brown sugar for sprinkling

Preparation

Pre-heat the oven to 170 – 180 degrees

  1. Sieve the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the butter and rub it into the flour using your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  2. Add the sugar and the dried fruit and mix well.
  3. Add the egg and 1 tablespoon of the milk and mix together. If the mixture is very dry add a little more of the milk.
  4. Use a baking sheet and using a large spoon, divide the mixture into small mounds on the baking sheet (golf ball size). Sprinkle with the brown sugar.

  1. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until the cakes are golden brown and well risen.
  2. Cool and eat with English tea.

This should make nine or ten cakes.
